Dr. Janice Koval has been at Internal Medicine Associates since 1997.
Originally from Massachusetts, Dr. Koval, has been practicing Endocrinology since 1995.
Dr. Koval received her MD from the University Of Rochester School Of Medicine, and from there, completed both an Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, as well as her Fellowship in Endocrinology. She did a second endocrine fellowship at the University of Texas San Antonio. While there she conducted clinical research on the effects of exercise on diabetes. She was fortunate to be working with a team of researchers that were able to identify the effects of aerobic exercise on the insulin pathway in skeletal muscle in humans. This was the first time that this was elucidated in humans. She presented these findings at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association.
In 2019 Dr. Koval served as a guest speaker for ThyCa, the thyroid cancer survivors association, to discuss some of the challenges faced by those living with thyroid cancer in accessing care- and how to overcome them. Dr. Koval sees patients from all over Alaska, now providing care via telemedicine to improve access to care for all Alaskans.
In her free time Dr. Koval enjoys spending time outside- often biking, hiking, or traveling in the arctic with her husband and their team of Alaskan Malamutes.
